Applications of Metabolomics to Drug Discovery & Development | InterAction Meeting Session, Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia, USA
Thursday 16 October 2008
chaired by Bruce Kristal (Brigham and Women’s Hospital) Bio....

Metabolomics is the systematic and theoretically comprehensive study of the small molecules that comprise a biological sample, eg, sera or plasma. Studies may approach the problem from the stand-point of single "snapshot views," from the standpoint of metabolic flux, and from multiple views of a changing biology. The last few years have seen an explosion of interest in this area due to the potential of metabolomics to complement the triad of genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics and to play an essential role in systems biology studies. Metabolomics-based studies can be used to better identify the status of an animal, evaluate the effects of a putative drug target, assess the ability to hit that target, and the consequences of the off-target hits. Taken together, this broad activity spectrum suggests that metabolomics will be an important addition to the toolbox of drug discovery and development. Metabolomics is expected to enhance both positive ("Go") and negative ("No Go") decisions, increasing efficacy and reducing costs. This session will look at the use of metabolomics in academic studies that assess physiology, in academic drug discovery as well as from the standpoint of biotech and pharmaceutical diagnostic and drug development.
