Abstract
Sun RFID Solution for Drug Authentication

Liz From and Vivek Khandelwal, Sun Microsystems Inc.

Drug Counterfeiting is a menace that affects us all in our day-to-day lives. The pharmaceutical industry and regulatory bodies around the world have been evaluating various measures to prevent drug counterfeiting. RFID enabled drug authentication is one of the prime anti-counterfeiting measure gaining acceptance from the industry and regulatory bodies alike. The pharmaceutical industry, regulatory bodies, such as the FDA in US, and technology standards bodies, like EPCGlobal are coming together on generally acceptable standards for the use of this technology in the pharmaceutical supply chain. Work still remains to be done around standards. Sun Microsystems, a leading technology vendor and a member of various standards bodies, including EPCGlobal, has been providing thought leadership around the use of this technology in the pharmaceutical industry and other industry verticals. The Sun RFID Industry Solution for Drug Authentication, launched in November 2005, brings together all the technology components from Sun and partners to implement a complete drug authentication solution. The Sun RFID Industry Solution lays out a roadmap to take customers from a simpler RFID Electronic Product Code (EPC) based drug authentication today to a more complex, supply chain wide, electronic pedigree based authentication in future.
