| Bonnie Montano is an Assistant Professor of Management Information Systems with the McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University,Washington, DC. She has previously held faculty positions with the University of Maryland and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She has completed funded research for the U.S. Social Security Administration, the Health Care Financing Administration, and the Naval Postgraduate School. She has authored or coauthored papers in Decision Support Systems, Communications of the ACM, European Journal of Operational Research, ASCE Journal of Urban Planning and Development, and Information Knowledge Systems Management. Her current research interests include the areas of intelligent decision support, knowledge management, and organizational learning.

Measuring Knowledge Management via Network Analysis

Knowledge management involves the leveraging of intellectual capital and knowledge for enhancing organizational performance. Knowledge management is typically measured in terms of the economic value it brings to an organization. However, knowledge is not necessarily an economic commodity, but rather the process of effectively leveraging resources. In response to this, this talk explores the use of network analysis for measuring knowledge management. Network analysis, while not a new technique, has not previously been applied to knowledge management. It differs from existing measures for knowledge management in that it evaluates relationships through which knowledge is shared, transferred, and leveraged, rather than measuring the knowledge itself. The talk will argue it is these connections for knowledge transfer that are ultimately responsible for enabling or inhibiting knowledge management. By examining social networks longitudinally, social network analysis can be used for assessing both the status quo of knowledge management in an organization as well as the progress of knowledge management in an organization over time.
