| About Romeo Cecchelli (Université Lille Nord de France) |
|
Pr. Romeo Cecchelli is presently Vice-President of the Professor University of Artois, Lens, France in charge of the scientific policy and head of the blood brain barrier laboratory.
He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Lille in France. His interest in the physiology and pathophysiology of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) led him into in vitro modelling of the blood-brain barrier to facilitate investigations related to the regulation and function of the cerebrovasculature. In the early 90’s, he did pioneering work at the Institut Pasteur de Lille in establishing a co-culture model of the blood-brain barrier which could be used for mechanistic studies and as a permeability screen in the pharmaceutical industry.
In 1997, he was appointed as full Professor of Cell Biology at the Université d’Artois and founded his own research group. In 2001, he founded a spin off of his laboratory (Cellial Technologies) which is specialised in prediction of drug brain penetration and He is still scientific advisor of the company.
The current research of his laboratory are focused on (1) In vitro modelling of the neurovascular unit to study cell-cell interactions (2) Ischemic stroke and its effects on the brain endothelium and (3) characterisation of brain lipid metabolism in the normal state and in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer Disease and the regulatory role of the BBB. Finally, He is also participating to several European research programs (Eustroke; Predict i.v.).
